Telephones

Iknow calling back to the states is expensive and the roaming charges are outrageous. How does just using your internent, skype, GPS service from the phone work over in Europe?

pretty much the same as it does in wifi areas stateside. You don't say which fone you have, but if its an IPhone try turning on airplane mode and switching on wifi. Then just use Skype and GPS while at home and see how it does. Some GPS using aps refer to the internet to move massive amounts of data to draw maps, especially those which refer to Google Maps. Other GPS aps, like NavFree which I use, have the map data offline so don't need the internet. If you get live traffic reports that will use data. So try out your aps in airplane mode. Skype works the same wherever you have wifi, Europe or States.

Ralph, maybe it depends where you are when you try to use the WiFi. I was in Hotel Smereldo this Spring, and had absolutely no wifi issues at all. Got on when I wanted, got what I wanted when I did get on. In fact most days I contributed to this very Helpline. Perhaps its best not to generalize. Sorry to hear that when you tried it where you were it wasn't great.

Agree with Nigel, it works well and reliably unless you're in some weird wifi-less zone.
