Does anyone know if rental agencies in Italy would have GPS for rent? Or can a US GPS direct on the road in Chianti? Thanks.
All car rental agencies in Italy have GPS as an option.
Most of them will rent GPS, but if you already have a GPS unit you use in US, it is much better for you to buy an additional Italian map database to it (virtually all GPS units sold after 2007 have this option). Check your manufacturer's website. Reasons: (i) the cost of an Italian map database it is likely to be cheaper than renting (ii) you are already familiar with how it operates
It's better to bring your own GPS for a couple of reasons. First, it's best to have one you are comfortable using. For the cost to rent a GPS, you can pretty much buy one of your own. Second, you're going to Italy... If you reserve a GPS and they don't have one when you get there, they'll simply shrug their shoulders and say, "Oh well." - then you will be stuck without a GPS, which you really need in Italy (more than anywhere I've traveled). Just make sure you have a GPS that includes European maps. Some North America only GPS models let you add Euro maps, but the cost is often high enough to consider shopping for a new unit that includes both.
I agree bring your own GPS. The ones in the rental cars can be a pain to learn to use. I always bring my Garmin and it works great and I know how to use it. If you have a Garmin you to to there website and buy the Italy chip for about 50 bucks. Don't leave home without it!
One of the reasons I think GPS are essential for travelling in Italy is that the highway signs don't have numbers, just names.
