Trying to decide if my husband and I should stay in Alghero the entire time we are in Sardinia (9 nights starting September 2, 2017) OR split our time between Alghero and San Teodoro so we can at least do a day excursion to see La Maddalena? I feel like there are more places to stay and more things to do in Alghero, but I want to make sure we get some beach time too so want to make sure there is enough beach action in Alghero? We also want some dancing and good restaurants, and from what I've read Alghero does have some nightlife?

Split your stay in more than one base. Sardinian roads do not lend themselves to be driven far on the same day on day trips from one base. Very curvy and slow, and the island is large.
For example, from Alghero to Palau or Santa Teresa (Maddalena boat excursions depart from those towns) it's 3 hours drive each way.
I generally stay in Santa Teresa, but Palau area is also a great base. From Palau you can reach Santa Teresa in 30 min drive (from S. Teresa you can take a 40 min ferry to Bonifacio, in Corsica, which is beautiful) and from Palau to San Teodoro is no more than one hour. Palau is the main harbor for boats to Maddalena archipelago. Palau also offers more in terms of restaurants etc. it is a decent size harbor town.
From Alghero you can visit Stintino and Castelsardo, two popular quaint destinations.
So in your shoes I'd have two bases: Alghero and Palau.
