You have far too much on your list for 9 days. Is that 9 days or 9 nights?
Either way- far too many locations, even for "fast sightseers".

Do you have the plane tickets yet? If so what are your arrival and departure cities?
That information will help others with itinerary suggestions.

The first and last days of any European vacation is spent in transit from and to the airport--and essentially wasted days. And every time you move from city to city, you lose a day. A 9 day visit could easily give you 5 days or less in cities.
Unless you've been to Italy before, Rome alone is worthy of 4 days minimum.
Most first timers do best to visit Rome, Florence and Venice.

David identifies the standard first trip-- Rome, Florence,. Venice, but having been there and done that, I recommend starting with Rome, Pisa, and Verona.

Speaking as someone who is a "fast sightseer" myself...I agree with the others who are hinting at it. I'll be more direct: I would suggest you need either more time (a lot more) or fewer places. Or both.

Italy is not a small country, and it's a heckuva long way from Venice to Positano. With anything like your initial plan, you risk spending all your time in transit (literally, all of your time) and never any time actually being in and enjoying any of those places. Something has to be adjusted: the length of your trip, or the number of places (or both). Just my 2 eurocents.

js, you mention in previous threads that you've, "visited Italy many times before but never visited the Dolomites , Bologna, or Modena. I would love to visit Ravello again", that you want to go to Palio in Siena during this trip, and it looks like you've been to Positano and/or Amalfi and Rome. So, if you're familiar with the country, you should also be familiar with the time it takes to get around?

You list FAR too many places for 9 days and we don't know enough about you or your interests to create a trimmed itinerary. We also don't know if those 9 days include arrival and departure travel days. I'd cut the outliers (Rome and Positano) right off the top, and what you could include with the rest of your time depends on how much time you realistically have. How many nights will you have on the ground in Italy? Besides Palio in Siena - which would place your trip in July or August - what sorts of things do you want to see/do?

js,

Make sure your roller skates are laced up tight (JK) because I think the city visits you propose will be a "drive by." I doubt you can enjoy what is around you. What is your draw to these cities?

Perhaps you can read the wiki description of each and decide what stands out the most and then make a directional/geographical plan that makes sense and does not have you running all over. Also, it is good to get familiar with the Italian names of the cities if you are training it.

Rome https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome -- (Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber.)

Florence https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence -- (Central Italy and the capital city of the Tuscany region)

Tuscany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuscany -- (A region in central Italy)

Venice https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice -- (Northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region)

Bologna https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bologna -- (Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy.)

Modena https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modena -- (Province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy)

Not really recommending this - but - and this assumes you have 9 NIGHTS

Fly into Venice - 2 nights gives you one partial jet lagged day and one other day
Train to Bologna - 1 night - gives you an afternoon/evening and next half day
Train to Florence - 3 nights - do one day trip to a Tuscan hilltown, I suggest Siena even though it's larger than some
Train to Rome - 3 nights, fly out of Rome

Do a lot of research ahead of time so you know what you want to see, where those things are, have a map and have it all mapped out. Have hotels close to the train stations that will allow you to leave luggage before check-in/after check-out.

Here's a trip report I did on a similar trip that was really fast paced but we still had fun

How about just sitting at home with RS videos of Italy ... you could see a lot in nine days.

Hello js- I completely empathize with you. Most of us have very limited vacation time, and want to make the most of what we have! I like to travel that way as well...Its so much fun to research and learn and have many, many experiences in our very LIMITED vacation time. I remember running through Dublin, Ireland one weekend with my husband trying to frantically fit everything suggested as a "must see" in recently. We had fun! We were exhausted!
With that said,
- just trying to be helpful- My experience has taught me, as it has many posters here, that in Italy (and everywhere), trying to cram too much in doesn't result in the best experience. its so nice that the people here on the forum have so much good advice. I don't have anything solid to give, besides that. choose a couple or a few locations with more plans to come back later. Make sure to get a bit off the beaten track and balance that with locations with the magical history and art that Italy has to offer. I truly wish you the best! I wish you safe travels!
