Plan on using Padua as my base for day trips using train or bus. Will use 2-3 days to revisit Venice. Any other favorites that I should consider? Will be there May 20-29.
Verona and Vicenza. Palladian Villas near Vicenza. Colli Euganei (hills).
Also Ravenna, Ferrara, Mantova.
Bossano del Grappa. Not far from Vicenza. Be sure to check out the Poli distillery. Even if you're not into Grappa it's pretty cool.
Don't forget Padova. Plenty to see there.
Hi Patrick,
I would really recommend that you stay in Venice for a couple of nights because your experience of Venice will be so much better. It's magical in the evening, and if you need to catch a train at the end of the day, you'll miss out. We stayed in Padova 4 days and went to area towns a couple of days, especially Verona. Get a Padua Card, and enjoy the town. There's an easy tram to get around, but of course, we really enjoyed walking all over.
Highlights for us:
Saint Anthony's cathedral
Scrovegni's Chapel
Piazza della Frutta and Piazza delle Erbe - fun area to eat. Drinks are "dinner time" - the dining tables won't show up in the piazzas until later evening.
Museums with the Padua card.
