How difficult is it for a gluten free person to eat in restaurants in Italy?
Easier in Italy than many other countries in Europe. Salads ( especially the tomato - basil-mozzarella kind) risotto, polenta, grilled meat and fish, vegetable side dishes. Avoid soups, as they may have pasta or be thickened with flour.
Celiac disease/gluten intolerance is common in Italy. All Italian children are tested for the conditions in their early years. If you use Google you will find lots of entries identifying restaurants serving gluten free foods in individual towns and cities. You will also find GF food in supermarkets.
Joyce, I am a celiac and have travelled to Italy twice. It is quite easy. I print off the travellers cards that I found online to keep in my walled. I did google search for stores with Gluten free food where I was travelling. Also, all pharmacies are supposed to have some gluten free food; Sometimes it is behind the counter and you have to ask. Most regular groceries do carry GF food; I think I found some at a Coop in Venice. I always do ask at the gelato places too as not all gelato is GF. Grom, though expensive is very celiac freindly and heavenly tasting (google them for locations). I always bring a bunch of crackers in a cheapo plastic container for the beginning of the trip and some protein bars for the trip over and back. Have a great trip.
Can anyone tell me what the italian word for gluten free is ?
"Senza glutine" I have heard that many restaurants in Rome will serve gluten-free upon request.
