Yes you can. I used my Iphone, the Ipad works the same way. You may find free wi-fi at your hotel, or end up paying for it. Keep in mind, if you have 3 or 4G on the Ipad, make sure you disable that feature before you leave the US, or you will have roaming charges out the wazoo! We love our Ipad for travel. I'll suggest (if you are into it) to download a few movies BEFORE you leave the US to enjoy on boring nights in your hotel. We rented one from ITunes for our trip to France. It was so much fun to cuddle up in bed and watch a comedy late at night!! Next trip I'm renting/downloading 3-4 movies before we leave (I suggest before because the internet was pretty slow in France, I'll do it at home and be ready)

Go to Settings, then to Cellular Data to turn off the 3G. Since it is not on a contract, when my month ended a few days before my trip I cancelled my plan. I restarted it after returning home.

How do you disable 3G on your iPad?. I have a first generation iPad.

Ingrid, The answer will depend on whether you have a "Wi-Fi + 3G" iPad model. If it does have 3G capability and you have a SIM card installed, you'll need to disable the data roaming to avoid potentially expensive roaming charges. The procedure may vary a bit between iPad models, but basically you'll need to go to the Settings > General > Network and then switch-off Cellular Data (I'm assuming it's very similar to my iPhone). Depending on where you live in Vancouver, you might stop by Simply Computing or one of the other Apple dealers. They'll be able to run through the procedure with you, and explain the procedure. Simply Computing has a "Premium Service Provider" store at 101 – 1690 West Broadway, and another at Vancouver International Village at Ground floor, main concourse, 1165 – 88 West Pender Street. Cheers!

The original IPAD and even the early IPAD2 had either a wi-fi model or a 3G model. I believe the IPAD2 came out with a model that did have both. My IPAD2, which the grandson now has, was Wi-Fi only. My new IPAD (3) has both. My new IPAD can also be a Verizon "hotspot" (most cool). When I have it on, my nearby laptop can see Larry's IPAD. However, as mentioned above, turn of your 3G or 4G before you go to Europe. Very nasty roaming charges. You can turn it off under Settings/Cellular Data

To the best of my knowledge all iPads have wifi, and some also have 3G. My iPad 2 has both, and AT&T is my data provider.

I was told that a verizon iphone 4 would not work in Europe -- is this true?

@Sarah, "I was told that a verizon iphone 4 would not work in Europe -- is this true?" The "short answer" is - that may be true. If you're using a Verizon iPhone 4, then your phone won't work in Europe. If you're using a Verizon iPhone 4S, then it will work if you ask Verizon to enable the GSM portion. If at least 60-days has elapsed on your Verizon contract, you can request the phone to be unlocked. Check with them for details. Cheers!
