this is very tentative, just started thinking about going to italy in september of 08:
fly into rome, stay 3 nights.
take train to florence, stay 3 nights in sienna w/ day trip to florence.
take train to ct, stay 3 nights.
take train to venice, stay 3 nights, fly home from venice.

thanks!

Hello, I'd stay in Florence with a day trip to Sienna. So many things to see in Florence if you want to go to any of the museums you need the whole day without using up time on the train from Sienna.
My husband and I were in Italy for 3 weeks October 17-Nov 6. Very expensive and we didn't have "full" meals. I'm sure 2008 will be more so.
Your itinerary sounds great! Loved Cinque Terre and Venice. Church in Sienna was lovely. The floors were uncovered. It was a very rainy day so didn't sight see after the church.
Happy travels.

The itinerary looks great. If you are an art and museum person, Miss B is correct in that you should be in Florence and day trip to Siena. If you're not, and would prefer the Tuscan hill towns, wine tastinge, etc. then spending 3 days in Siena would be great.

Excellent plan! Finally, someone who doesn't want to try and see all of Europe in one exhausting dash!

I also suggest staying in Siena and busing to Florence for a day. Then day trip to another hill town for another day.

Will you be renting a car for your time in Tuscany? It will give you the option of getting more quickly to vineyards and hilltop towns.
