8 nights in Italy, sept 28-oct 6.

We have 8 nights between Munich and Paris. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with this planning process as our daughter is getting married this summer too. Our tentative plan is: train from Munich to Venice on sept 28, spend 2 nights. Train to Cinque Terra on 30th spend 3 nights. Train to Rome on Oct. 3rd spend 3 nights then fly to Paris.

  1. Does this sound reasonable? 2. Cinque Terra looks beautiful but its our biggest unknown, time of year? places to stay? I have no idea. 3. I'm also assuming flying from Rome to Paris is a better route but unsure of travel from The Cinque Terra to Rome.

We went to Italy (2 adults and 2 high school sons), landing at Venice, train to Florence, train to Rome, flew home.

I don't recall the number of days we spent in Venice but you will not have enough. One day sandwiched between two nights will fly by. I'd urge you to choose an area and enjoy it a bit more. Venice and Cinque Terra are so different, it would be a decision for you. But I'd choose one.

Pisa was a very short train ride from Florence and we did it as an afternoon outing.
If you choose to go to CT you could perhaps see sites like Florence on your way south to Rome.
I just did a google "train from venice to cinque terre" and see that it is 8-12 hours and the route is through Florence. Ha!

Watch the Rick Steves videos at YouTube on Venice and CT / Florence and choose a region and stay there. You'll enjoy yourself much more.

If your goal is to end up in Rome for your flight to Paris (and to actually see Rome) I don't think both Venice and Cinque are doable in the time allotted. Both places are amazing and completely different. Train travel between the two is laborious.

What I would do:
4 nights Venice (you will fill the days, don't worry)
4 nights Rome

Alternatively would could do 2-3 nights in Venice then take a side trip to Lake Como before moving onto Rome. Or, 2 nights Venice and 2 nights Florence. There really is value in spending time where you are and not trying to see everything in one trip. I know that statement is annoying to hear but it's the truth :)

Thank you for your feedback, It helps to get a 3rd party opinion. For as much as I would love to visit Cinque Terra I would rather spend a week. That just means another trip to Italy, darn :)

First, I would fly from Munich to Venice. Air Dolmiti flys this route.

Train would save some money, but travel time is over 7 hrs.

This is what your trip would look like if you included all 3 places.

9/28. Fly Munich-Venice 1H05m 7:15-8:20 cost 120E. Make sure your lodging will let you drop bags.

9/29. Venice

9/30. Train. Venice-Rome. 3H45m 7:25-11:00 or 9:25-13:10 fare 39E

10/1. Rome

10/2. Rome

10/3. Train. Rome-Cinque Terre (La Spezia) 4H 9:57-13:58. Super economy available 9E

10/4. Cinque Terre

10/5. Train. La Spezia-Pisa. 41 min. 12:15-13:55 9E

Pisa mover bus to airport. 8 min. 1,30E

Easyjet. Pisa-Paris Orly 1H45m 15:45-17:25 starting @ 57 E

To look up train times use http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Use Italian names for cities: Venice(Venezia S.Lucia) La Spezia Centrale Roma Termini.

While this can be done, just realize it would be rushed. It usually take 1/2 day to change locations.

Glad to see you dropped Cinque Terre, your trip will be much more enjoyable. Remember,

you WILL return.

Fly to Paris Orly out of Rome using Easyjet.

If you have dropped the Cinque Terre plan, you could still consider a one night stop in between Venice and Rome - Verona, Bologna. Or 2 nights in Florence.
