8 night Italy trip for Christmas Week

Hello!

We will be traveling to Italy over Christmas Week this year. I'm kind of struggling on an itinerary, could not decide whether to start in Rome or Mlan and maybe a town or city in between. Where we will start is where we will end up celebrating Christmas Eve and Day. I have been reading that things shut down on certain dates and I'm struggling with a good itinerary that isn't at a neck-break pace as we will have 2 not so young inlaws with us, I'm thinking 2 to 3 towns/cities tops so we can enjoy the sites and culture but it be a "vacation" as well. Of note, we already had been to Rome, Florence and Venice in the past, but not over the Christmas holidays. Only reason we are going back to Rome is because my inlaws want to visit the Vatican and the Basilica,

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

miuccia,

Thank you.

So I would suggest doing a brief finish in Milan to see the Last Supper and the Duomo and a nice warming risotto lunch - and be done with it

-- so will your suggestion be to spend less days in Milan then? Haven't been to Milan but have been to Rome, FLorence, Venice, Tuscan Region - also Pisa and Siena... so struggling to decide which town or city to add to Rome and Milan...

Rome is likely to be much warmer

--that is the upside to Rome, it being warmer,,,so that is why I am considering staying longer in Rome, but also, I don't feel the need to stay longer in Rome, maybe because had already done it in depth a couple of years ago, except for my inlaws of course, it being their first time....

Thank you for letting me pick on your thoughts.

Since you did many towns already, maybe try to stay in Milan a bit. I would think the Duomo and shops would look nice at Christmas. I was in Florence over Christmas and I had a great time. Weather was not bad and found stuff open. I would like to see Milan at Christmas and if there was extra time and the trains not snowed in (greatest unknown factor). Then I would like to see some towns in the Italian Alps during Christmas. Many of those towns are "Swiss Like" and I like the Swiss/ Germanic Christmas traditions. It might be interesting to see how they blend the Italian traditions with the Germanic traditions. Good luck.

Anthony,

Thank you, I actually plan on doing the Bermina to St Moritz, but wondering if that is something that is doable as a day trip. We were in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago and the Bermina express was something I really wanted to do but just couldnt really fit into our itinerary.

miuccia,

Thank you for your suggestion on Bologna, will look into it. My other question is, do tickets (rome-milan) sell out? And are they actually cheaper if bought far out in advance?
