Hello,
We are travelling next July (I know, crazy lady!) to the Amalfi coast and basing ourselves in Praiano. I am thinking of arriving from Florence to Salerno and then taking the Ferry to either Amalfi or Positano, then the bus.
We are going one day to Capri, and we are going to rent scooters to tour the island (anyone who has done this, please chime in and share your experience please.)
We are also planning to walk the Path of the Gods. This will be the highlight of our trip for my husband, so he wants to do the entire trail.
I am looking for any other trails to hike, or advice on suggestions for 'not to be missed' sites. I have done a ton of research already, but I also like to hear from people who have had boots on the ground. We are in our mid 40's, fairly fit, travelling with 2 teens. We are open to suggestions and advice from anyone who wishes to add their advice or wisdom to our stay.
Thank you in advance!
Cheers.
Tania
The SITA bus lines run to/from Amalfi, so it may be easier to get on the bus in Amalfi than in Positano.
Hello Tania,
We were in Praiano for 5 days last September. You might want to take the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi and then the bus to Praiano. We did that route in reverse and it worked well to leave the Amalfi coast. In regards to Praiano. We found to be a wonderful place from which to be based. The bus system works well. We enjoyed many dinners at La Strada restaurant in Praiano. The view from the terrace is breathtaking. We hiked the Path of the Gods from Praiano to Positano. To get there we climbed about 1900 steps up from just behind our hotel Casa Colomba. The steps took us to Il Monastero which is an old building where refreshments were available as well as toilets. It as a very nice place to stop and rest while sitting under fig trees. The trail at that leg begins around there. It is rough terrain with rocks to climb mixed with easier areas to traverse. Safety barriers are not up to North American standards. They are flimsy and not to be relied on. In other words don't lean on them. There are a few rest areas with picnic tables. It is advisable to take plenty of water. Wear hats and sunscreen. Wear shoes that are closed toe and suitable for hiking. There is a lot of loose gravel so watch your step. We walked the trail a week after a rain storm and some of the trail was washed out and not repaired. July is dry and should not be a problem. At the end of the trail in Positano we had to descend about 1/2 hour or so on steps and road to the main part of Positano where we caught the bus back to Praiano. Opinions vary on the time required to walk the path. Tour groups tend to slow things down. For us the round trip including the bus back took about 5 1/2 hours. The scenery is breathtaking any photos don't do it justice. We are fairly fit and in our sixties so you should have no problem doing the trail. It was tiring but we would gladly do it over again some day.
Wonderful, Thank you!
