8 days on Amalfi Coast, where to stay? What to do?

hello! Our family of four will be going by train from Florence to Sorrento and plan to stay about 7-8 days. Is there a time during the day or evening that makes the most sense to arrive? We want to visit some out of the way places (smaller towns), remote beaches, etc, but also spend a couple days in Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi and Positano, and one day in Pompeii. Seems like we should not rent a car, but should plan on taking buses. We love to hike, do not mind hiking to beaches that are less crowded, and enjoy finding family run restaurants, etc....basically, we share Rick Steve's love of getting off the beaten path like everyone else on this site! We could also rent a car for just 1-2 of the days to get to places further away if that makes sense. Any suggested itineraries? Where do you think we should stay that would be a laid by place that would be a good central base? Or, should we stay in two different locations? Open to any suggestions, and on a budget of course! Thank you!! From here, we will be taking a train to Venice for a day. Or, is there someplace along the way we should stop? Will be there around the last week in June.

A day's not long in Venice. Are you flying back from Venice?

And if you are NOT flying out of Venice, why aren't you just doing the 2-hour trip between Florence and Venice rather than going all the way down to Sorrento and back?

Sorrento is a good base from which you have train to Naples and Pompeii, bus to Amalfi and Positano, and ferry to Capri. Maybe move to Salerno for your final 2 nights if you wish to make a trip to Paestum for the archaeological site with Greek temples. Salerno is on the main high speed rail trunk route.

I would recommend that you stay 2 nights in Venice and knock off some of your Sorrento stay. And as suggested I would do that from Florence not Sorrento. The Amalfi Coast is beautiful no doubt about it but it isn't the easiest place to travel around. Buses are the best way and once you have been to Ravello, Amalfi, climbed the hills of Positano, and Priano you likely won't want to do it again. So, what will you do for 8 days? Capri is one and maybe 3 more for the coast. Put the rest into Venice, or someplace between.

Now, if you want to stop on the way to Venice try Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa. It's just east of Rome.
