My husband and I are traveling to Rome the beginning of October and will have 8 full days (not including the days we travel in/out of Rome). We are trying to determine another city to pair with Rome for our trip. I have been to Rome, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi & Capri), but my husband has never been to Italy. We are going to see the typical sites in Rome, but I wanted to explore somewhere new. I was thinking about Lecce, but I'm not sure if that's trying to squeeze too much in considering our time frame and it looks like Lecce is about 5.5 - 6 hours from Rome. Do you think that will be too much or do you have any other suggestions on another town to go to that is a little closer to Rome?
High speed trains to Milan or Venice or Bologna/Parma. There is always Torino or Genova too. You can do a lot with a day trip, perhaps Orvieto or even Siena. Maybe an overnight if you can.
You’ve got many options. Of course you could do day trips from Rome to Orvieto, Tivoli, Ostia. My personal choice would be a few days in Naples with a visit to Herculaneum or Pompeii.
Bologna is a nice place, especially if you love food! I would spend a couple nights, and go to Parma also. About 2 hrs via fast train.
Day trip to Orvieto, day trip to Naples. Both under 90 minutes via Freccia train. Enjoy the heck out of Rome with the rest of the time.
Great - thank you everyone. These are all great suggestions. I'm starting to think maybe we'll do a couple nights in Naples with a day trip to Ischia one day and Herculaneum another day and then the rest of the time in Rome and doing some day trips to other towns from there. I have already been to Pompei. Does anyone think Herculaneum would be worth going to if I've already been to Pompei?
