My daughter is currently studying in Rome for six weeks and I will be joining her for eight days when her classes are finished. We made the mistake of scheduling our flights in and out of Rome. She will have seen areas surrounding Rome and I am planning an itinerary with this in mind. My interests are the Amalfi coast and Northern Tuscany and Cinque Terre. Any suggestions for seeing it all?
Patty, it's your trip, so you get to do what you want. But as Kent has pointed out, it will be fairly challenging to do your wish list in the time you have without the risk of feeling like you are chasing your tail.
My suggestion would be to stay in Tuscany for the whole time, with a night in Rome before departure. Stay in one spot for the whole week and rent an apartment in a historic spot and take day trips to hill towns. Or move base once in the middle. the north and south of Tuscany are rather different and you could base in both areas.
I would prefer to go north first and the only area that I am definite on is Cinque Terre which I thought was Northern Tuscany. I would like to avoid renting a car.
Kent,
You have it right. I am completely flexible and open to your suggestions.
Love Kent's itenerary! We stayed in Riomaggiore recently and absolutely loved it. We rented a room from Edi's Rooms and it was great. Right on the water.
I know some people love Florence, but I would skip it. I just didn't love it like I did Rome. Rome is amazing and I would definitely allow plenty of time there. There is SO much to do and see in Rome.
Also, consider going to Siena in Tuscany. That was my absolute favorite town that we stayed in with the best food we had!
I agree with Ron. I'd rent a villa for a week and then travel by car to nearby hill towns, Siena, and Florence. Siena would also make a good home base. There is good bus service to all nearby towns if you don't want to drive.
