Train from airport to Milan's Central station and a train from there. Walk off the train, out the front door and you are standing next to the canal.

Thank you very much. Could you explain the Mini fare on trenitalia? What is the likelihood that you could get that fare 2 days ahead vs 90 days? Also, is the bus the best way to get from the airport to the train station or is the subway better?

Go to www.roninrome.com for an explanation of the mini fares. Basically they're at the whim of Trenitalia and are a liimited number of seats.

Bus and tram or subway fares are about the same. Be sure to validate your ticket (on the bus, tram, or subway, there will be a little box near the driver and at the back). Bus is more likely to run into traffic.

The Malpensa Express now runs to Milano Centrale as well as to Cadorna, but you have to pick the right train. Trains going to Centrale follow a different route from those going to Cadorna. Trains to Centrale run every 30 minutes. There also are two companies that offer shuttle bus service between the airport and Milano Centrale. Buses depart every 20 minutes. Mini fares are tiered. When the cheapest ones are gone for a particular departure date and time, the price keeps increasing until all that is left are regular fares. If you wait until two days before departure, your chances of getting a Mini fare are not good. It's now possible to book tickets on the Trenitalia site up to 120 days in advance. However, there is a semi-annual timetable update that will take effect on 11 June. Until the new timetables are uploaded (in May), you won't be able to book dates beyond 10 June.
