I am an American student studying in Rome and I have a free week at the end of October that is meant to be used for traveling around on your own. I had planned on going to Lake Garda for mountain biking, but I have a limited budget and it looks like I will not be able to afford it. Any ideas on a good side trip?

How about the area in and around Orvieto? Very convenient to where you are.

Perugia was interesting, and I think end of October is truffle season. There are some great small towns near there in Umbria and Tuscany. Woudl be nice for biking as well.
