We are not quite sure what exact time we will arrive in Naples to take a train ( fast one hopefully) to Rome. I was going to but online but our time is not exact so I am afraid we may be late. Is the trains usually booked up between 2 and 4pm? I hate to rush to get to Naples if getting a fast train is available. I know this question has probably beeen asked and I apprciate your patience Pat ( we are leaving Sorrento to Naples on Wed Sept 21) and from Naples to Rome

You are correct, it has been asked many, many times. The answer is always the same. It is very rare for a train to be sold out at any time in second class even more rare in First class. There is limited direct bus service to Rome from Sorrento so you would not have to change trains in Naples.
I checked the Circumvesuviana timetables for this coming Wednesday. Trains leave Sorrento at 12:07, 12:37, 13:07, 13:25, 13:56, 14:22, and 14:55. The ride to Napoli Garibaldi (lower level of Napoli Centrale) takes just over an hour. High-speed EuroStar Italia trains to Rome leave Napoli Centrale at 13:50, 14:35, 14:50, 15:35, 15:50, and 16:50. IC trains leave at 14:17, 15:17, and 16:17.
It sounds like you've been on Trenitalia, but if not... the fast train (1h10m) is €45 2nd class (€36 advance), next is one afternoon train at 1h45m for €36 (€25 advance), some at 2h04m for €22 (€18 advance), and a couple at 2h39m for €10,50 (no advance discount). All of those trains are available between 14:00 and 16:00. So, the savings may not be worth worrying...and you WILL get a seat. I'll be on those very trains a week later ;-)
Thank you very much for the answers. At least I know I don't have to buy in advance and our day can be as it happens.
