International driving permit

Rick Steves mentions in his book that an Interntional Driver permit is required for driving in Italy. My wife just came back from France, and was told that this is no longer required to drive in Europe. Which is true, a permit is required or a permit is not required?

Italy requires it....France does not. Each country has its own rules and regulations.

We came back from Italy 2 weeks ago, the rental car Company did not need the International Driver L. Just the Driver License. There were 2 more gentlement from USA and them also comfirme that to us. We all agreed that AAA wants to make a extra money for us ,travelers.
We had been driving in Europe in the past and never ask for that " International Driver License"

It's not the job of the Italian rental agencies to regulate drivers, that's the job of the police. If you go to Italy the first thing you will realize is that there is not a standard way to do anything. If you are stopped by the police and do not have an IDP some police will waive you through and others will write you a fine - it depends on the police. Unlike the US, the police/carbinieri can pull you over for no reason and check your documents. There can be a road block where everyone is checked. AAA is not running a scam. Check the US State Department's web page - an IDP is required: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1179.html
Has Rick ever steered travelers wrong before?

Why take the chance. Probably you will not have to show it but if you do and don't have it you are subject to be fined. You could also take a chance on driving the Austrian and Swiss Autobahn without purchasing the vignette sticker and maybe not get caught but if you do you are subject to a big fine. Peace of mind of having the IDP is worth the cost of having one.

Why would the rental company care? Same thing with the insurance company? If you're not 100% legal and get into an accident they'll just void your insurance.

The cost of the IDP is small when compared to the total cost to rent a car.

Thank you all for your input; I'll likely get an IDP.
