Rome to Sorrento

We will be in Rome mid November. Is Sorrento a good day trip?

Jennifer, IMHO Sorrento would be better as at least a two-day destination from which you could day trip to Pompeii and surroundings, Positano or Capri, as examples. To make Sorrento a day trip would not give you enough time to explore since the train connection from Rome is not direct and you must either take the Circumvesuviana train, a boat, or taxi from Naples to Sorrento.

Many people would say Sorrento is not your best day trip from Rome--not enough time to enjoy it, too rushed. Sure, you could do it--but why? If you are able to, you'd be glad you gave yourself more than just a couple of hours in Sorrento.

You don't say how long you will be in Rome. There is enough to see in Rome to easily fill several days. If you really have enough time for a day trip there are companies that have package day trips to places like Assisi and Pompeii. That might be a good option since it includes entrance fees and transportation and would make best use of your time. Sorrento is best for at least 2 full days since it is really more of a kick back and relax place and a base for the Amalfi coast than a sightseeing place. If you have time to go and stay, it is a wonderful destination in itself - one of my most favorite places.

Thanks for the replies. We have decided to skip Sorrento this trip. We don't want to cram too much in.

thanks
