7 nights in Sardinia

I will have only 7 nights in late August to stay in Sardinia. My plan is to fly from Florence to Cagliari. Should I stay the 7 nights there or split between another town? If split, should I rent a car or rely upon public transport, which I understand is not too reliable. I need to be in Rome on Sept 6 for my return flight to New York. I will plan on staying in Rome on Sept 5 for an early morning flight back to the states Also should I get my C-19 test in Sardinia or Rome on the 5th?
Thank you

There are no flights from Florence (FLR) to Sardinia currently. You can fly from nearby Pisa (PSA) to any of the Sardinian airports:
Alghero (AHO) with RyanAir
Olbia (OLB) with Volotea
Cagliari (CAG) with RyanAir

I only know the northern side of the island, which many people consider the better/more beautiful part. Both Olbia and Alghero are on the north side (I've always used Olbia from Florence, when they used to have flights from Florence).

To visit Sardinia I definitely suggest to rent a car.

The island is more than double the size of the Big Island of Hawaii, therefore if you stay in one base only you can only visit within an hour or two drive from there. Distances are not easy to cover because freeways are very few and basically only through the interior, so if you are interested in the beautiful coast, you will be mostly in curvy two lane highways where you will be able to drive on average no more than 50-60 km per hour. Top speed limit on two lane highways is 70km/h.
