Hi,
I'm planning to go to Italy for a 7 days trip in Sept/Oct. General idea is to spend those 7 days in Rome, Florence and Venice, then head up to Paris for another 4 days. What is the best city to visit to maximized the limited time we have? Is it easier if we go to Rome first, Florence then fly to Paris from Venice? or is there a better itinerary?
Thank you.
Do you have seven days exclusive of arrival day? Where are you flying in from?
Most of us recommend counting nights so you have a real idea of full days for sightseeing. Assuming your 7 days is really 6 nights, you only have time for two places. Consider this as a template for your time in Italy.
Day 0. Depart home and assuming you take overnight to get here arrive on Day 1
Day 1. Arrive Italy 1st location, jet lagged. Freshen up, spend time getting oriented; stay 3 nights
Day 2. Touring
Day 3. Touring
Day 4. Change locations - takes 1/2 day; stay 3 nights
Day 5. Touring
Day 6. Touring
Day 7. Fly to Paris
There's your 6 nights with 2 1/2 days to spend in each of two cities. It's almost enough time each for Firenze and Venezia. It's a mere toe-in-the-water for Roma.
An idea might be to spend the entire time in either Firenze or Roma, taking day trips to places nearby such as Ostia or Pompeii and Orvieto from Roma, or from Firenze to Siena and other Tuscan hill towns.
I would eliminate one of the Italian cities. While there is never enough time to see everything, the changing hotels and traveling for 7 days is too much in my opinion.
Thank you for the replies. We're flying from Jakarta, Indonesia. I can still change the plan regarding the length of stay to 9 days ( 8 nights) in Italy. That means 3 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Florence and 2 nights in Venice. I think this will give us more justice to really enjoy Italy.
What is the most recommend way to travel from each city, by train or by bus?
Train is the easiest and fastest option. Here are the train line links

You cannot buy yet for Sept/October trips, it's too early but it will give you an idea of schedules and travel times. Trenitalia services all of Italy whereas Italo hits the bigger touristy cities, like Rome, Florence and Venice. Both are priced about the same, depending on how early you buy. Use the "Le Frecce" train type when searching on Trenitalia. Those are the high speed trains. Italo trains are all high speed.
On Trenitalia, you can buy 120 days in advance and Italo is earlier than that. The earlier you buy, the cheaper the ticket. Note you search for cities under their Italian name, Roma, Firenze and Venezia
