7 days in sicily - Itinerary Suggestions

My husband and I just decided that we will be heading to Sicily for a week (arriving sat night, leaving sat night) in late April. Our second trip to Italy but first to Southern Italy! We are in our 30s, enjoy driving in Europe, exploring off the beaten path; we love food, wine, museums/art/history and hiking. We usually like sleeping in towns / cities so that we can walk to dinner and not drive at night.

Only concrete plans are flying into Palermo (and I know not to rent a car until we're outside the city.) and departing from Catania.

Any/all suggestions are welcome!

I'll start by saying a week in Sicily is not a lot, so you'll have to choose what's most important. Also beaches are pretty but the water will be too cold for swimming (just in case you were thinking about it). I was there in late April 2 years ago and the wildflowers on the western side of the island were more plentiful and colorful that I've ever seen anywhere.

Rent a car in Palermo when you're ready to leave. With good driving instructions and some patience, you'll be out of the city and on the freeway in no time. Traffic in Palermo can be incredibly slow, but it's not so difficult that it's worth schlepping out to the airport to get a car.

On Sunday, take the bus to Monreale, don't miss the cloisters. On the way back, you can get off near the Palatine Chapel. At that point, I took the Frommer's self-guided Old Town Walking Tour (from their website).

On the way out, you could stop at the Zingara Reserve for a hike (4 hours), see the Greek temple at Segesta and get to Trapani or Erice for the night.

From there, to the south coast, stopping to see Greek temples at Selinunte, then Agrigento (excellent archaeology museum). If you stop at Selinunte, consider using the shuttle - the site is large and may save you time. If you don't stop at Selinunte, you could probably get to Piazza Armerina for the night.

Next day, visit the Villa Romana, then stop in Noto and/or Ragusa on the way to Siracusa for 1-2 nights (stay in Ortigia).

End your stay in Taormina. Skip Etna. Skip Catania. BTW it's easy to return the car at the airport. Be sure to fill the tank before you get there, and follow the signs carefully for rental car return.

Chani gave you a good, fast-paced trip.

I would include Cefalu as a daytrip from Palermo (about an hour by train). You can see beautiful mosaics in the cathedral and hike up the Rocca behind it. There is a great restaurant in front of the cathedral, with a gazebo-type deck area for dining outside.

You will have views of Etna from the airport boarding/waiting area.

Zoe's right, I really liked Cefalu. The problem is too little time, too many places. I spent 2 weeks there, didn't get to Noto or Ragusa and skipped Taormina because of a bad knee.

Hi Erin!

I have come across your post searching for suggestions for our trip to Sicily. Now that you have returned do you have any insight for me as to what you did and where you stayed? Would love to hear!

We loved Scopello for the scenery and Erice and Segesta which are not too far from Palermo and then on the other side of the island I would day trip Taormina and stay in Ortygia. Due to the lack of time I would skip Catania . Unlike many others we were very disappointed in our trip to Etna. It took the better part of a day and was foggy which made the visibility poor. Sicily is beautiful. We only had a week, too and I would really like to go back and see more.

Here is another vote for Cefalu - I stayed there 2 nights because it was so relaxing and "cute"
Here is a good link for all kinds of info about Sicliy - there are countless links on this site and some good maps.
Best of Sicily
