7 days in Sicily

Hi all,

Love the forum- I find myself reading it even when there's no trip on the horizon- but there's always a trip on the horizon, it's just that the horizon's a bit more distant sometimes!

We have a chance to go to Sicily for 7 days in February. Having never been, I'm hoping that someone could suggest a narrower scope, so that we don't get some cockamamie idea to 'see it all', as I am wont to do. Two fiftysomethings, very experienced travelers, no kids (for this trip, anyway), like to hike or bike, love cities, happy to drive, train, whatever. We could probably be talked into Puglia instead? We will be back, so there's no reason to try and see it all, but we would like a nice compact trip with a solid taste of the area, and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Robert in Montreal

I would choose one section with two bases: Palermo with possible daytrips to Monteale, Cefalu, Segesta; then Trapani for a couple of nights, with a visit to Erice, and/or Segesta if you don't go from Palermo; or Agrigento for a couple of nights with a visit to Selinunte.

Or go to the other side and base in Siracusa with visits to Noto, Ragusa, Modica; a couple of nights in Taormina (put in a daytrip to Villa Romana del Casale from either base.

I would do a 4/3 or 5/2 night stay.

Oops, you are counting days, not nights, so is it 5, 6 or 7 nights in Sicilia?

Probably fly in/fly out on Saturdays, so 6-7 sleeps. Also, any weather-related tips for February travel?

Thanks, robert

If you go into the mountains, it will be cold, perhaps snowy, road conditions may be affected, as well as visibility. I would keep checking forecasts before your final packing. Sorry, I haven't been to Sicilia in February.

Your time is shorter than I would like for Sicily. If you think there will be another opportunity to go to Sicily when you'll have closer to 2 weeks (even more would be better), I'd seriously consider Puglia instead for your February trip if historical weather patterns look OK to you (I haven't checked, but you're from Montreal, so...). February fares are sort of all over the place, but if your dates are flexible, there are some good deals into Bari.

If you're unlikely to have a chance at a longer Sicilian vacation and you're OK with mid-winter weather (far warmer than Montreal, for sure), I agree with Zoe's suggestions. There are very interesting sights all over the island, but sticking to the west or the east is really the best approach on a short trip.

I don't know if you have seen my trip report from 2014, and it was in April-May not February, but there should still be some things in there of help to you: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/sicily-palermo-caltanisetta-siracusa-taormina

My biggest tip is to be aware that while Palermo is a bigger city, Catania has the bigger airport with more flight options. If you want to see different sides of the island, be sure to fly into one and out of the other. My other tip is that flights to Sicily from North America are complicated; Rome has the most connections, and Frankfurt and Munich can also work. Many other cities require changing airports (e.g., from Paris CDG to Paris Orly), so they don't work well as connection points - limiting your options. Particularly with short time such as you have, look at the flight options before making any further decisions.

As Zoe says, with that short a visit, best to stick to one side of the island. In February, I think the western side might offer more . . . a couple days in Palermo, maybe train to Cefalu for an overnight, then back to Palermo to pick up a car and spend a few days visiting the coastal towns and the Greek ruins, or 1-2 nights to see Agrigento and Villa Romana del Casale.

I haven't been to Puglia, but I'm planning to be in Naples and Salerno in February for a week-plus (been to Sorrento). If you haven't been there, that's another possibility . . . Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri . . .
