Hello I will be travelling to to Rome with my mom the last week of September I have been reading two guide books and so far this is what I have for my itinerary any thoughts? There is just so much too do! But I do want to take it somewhat easy for my mom. MON: arrive at 6 pm get to hotel walk around have dinner relax and go to bed! TUE: Vatican, St. Peters w/ dome and Sistine Chapel. Eve: Piazza Navona and Pantheon WED: a.m. Papal Audience followed by lunch, then Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. THUR: Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Museo Galleria Borghese eve: Campo de Foriegn FRI: day trip to Orvieto SAT: Pilgrims Rome and relax and explore city SUN: go see Pope again... Then leave to Assisi. Although I may switch tues. and Sat. Since I'm having trouble finding a Spanish Vatican tour.. And the only one available via Vatican official tour is only offered the Sat. I will be there...and the others were to $$$...
Looks like a good pace, Cynthia. Tuesday will be a big day, but Thursday you'll have enough open time that you can pop in a church or two. You might add the Pantheon to this day and arrive when it opens for the best experience. The Trevi is nice in early morning when no one else is there. (Before 9:00) Since you will be nearby when seeing the Panthon, I recommend the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. Very beautiful with 3 Caravaggios. Amazing church! Campo dei Fiori is a place you may pass through more than once, depending on where you are staying. Fun to see in the AM when it is a bustling market, and again for an aperitivi when it transforms in the early evening.
Sounds very good, keep in mind that many churches (such as San Luigi dei Francesi) close for a couple of hours during lunch. If you go to the San Giovanni Laterano area, you can also easily visit the church of San Clemente nearby. Beautiful mosaic and an older church down below, and a pre-Christian temple below that.
Thanks for the tips especially about the closing times I wouldn't have thought that some churches would close for lunch...
A lot of the churches are closed between 12:30 and 3:00. You'll want to doublecheck with each church on their own website, just to make sure. And they always reserve the right to close for funerals, weddings, etc.
