My wife and I are traveling to Rome for 7 days. It's our first trip abroad. I welcome any comments, recommendations, etc on travel, food, sightseeing or day trips to neighboring cities.
Hi Steven. That's an easy one. Buy Rick Steve's Italy or Rome book - a wealth of info!! Enjoy your trip!
Yep, a good guide book is what you need for such a broad question. In addition the RS Rome book, I also suggest the Eyewitness Travel Guide for Rome. It's loaded with color photos and drawings that help you pick what you would find interesting. Happy travels.
I'll pick those books up today! Thanks :)
If just staying in Rome, then get R Steves' Rome book. Also look at RoninRome.com for some detail info on day trips and Rome in general. Rome can be a very intense introduction to Europe.
Definitely, the Ron in Rome site. RS has great ideas for neighborhood walks (Rome is really a lot of neighborhoods close together). Find a nice hotel or B&B with a rooftop garden or terrace area to cap off your evenings - seven days is a long time in a hotel room, even if you're only sleeping there.
Hi, we are planning a future trip to Rome and I have been listening to a lot of Rick Steve's podcasts. Lots of great ideas for everything from sights to food to general interest. Easily heard on itunes. He interviews lots of local tour guides and people of interest. Enjoy your trip!!
How could I have forgotten Ron in Rome? He's amazing. His website is loaded with very specific "How to" info including tons of photographs to explain everything from how to purchase tickets for the train to how to travel to Orvieto from Rome as a daytrip.
Great advice from everyone, but here are two lesser-known websites that have a wealth of great ideas and knowledge about thing Roman. http://www.parlafood.com http://www.revealedrome.com Also loved Palazzo Valentini, an oft overlooked historical site. Do make sure you take time to enjoy this amazing city. We like to do one "major" thing each day, then just take our time walking, exploring, sitting in a piazza and absorbing the atmosphere. (The Vatican, however, will take all day most likely.) With a week, you don't need to rush. Oh, and if you can, get an aparment instead of a hotel. For a longer stay, you'll appreciate the extra space, a refrigerator, a teapot, maybe even a washing machine! Try http://www.vrbo.com
