I am planning a trip to italy in May but will only have a week or 10 days. Any suggestions on an itinerary?

First trip?

Venice, Florence and Rome. In that order.

No I haven't purchased the flight yet - any tips on that would be appreciated too. Italy seems quite expensive to fly to from Vancouver, even more than other european destinations. In terms of interests - history, art, food, wine ...

Hey Karyn,

If you're feeling really frugal, and it's worth the trade-off in the extra hours it would eat up (probably 5 or so each way), you can fly into another European city and take a budget flight from there into Italy.

I usually fly into Manchester, England (MAN) and take a Ryan Air flight into Venice or Rome. I have saved $400 or so dollars on my flight by doing this. I have also found cheaper flights by searching for London, Berlin, and Frankfurt airports. But I'm not sure which budget airlines are most convenient from these airports (Easy Jet, etc). Sometimes the airports for budget airlines are quite out of the way, so you'd really have to look into it. And it might not be worth it with only a 10 day trip, but I thought I'd just throw it out there! Good luck!

We did Italy in a week....Rome 2 days, Florence 3 days, & Venice 2 days.

On the next trip I would stay in Tuscany for an extra day or two, just a personal choice.

You definitely want to fly open jaw....Into Rome & out of Venice for example.

Karyn, I also recommend open jaw ticket. But when shopping for airfare it's important to keep in mind the departure time when you are returning home. If you depart really early, then you may have to consider staying near that airport for your last night.

I flew Delta from Venice leaving at 11:30am. Gave me plenty of time to take the Alilaguna boat to the airport.

I preferred Rome, Florence and then Venice in that order personally. Fast paced Rome first, then more intimate Florence and then magical Venice.

And 10 days it just right too.

I agree with Gela and others. Fly open Jaw. Fly into Rome and then take the trains to Florence and finish with Venice for your flight home. On my first trip to Italy I spent many wonderful days in Venice, Florence, and Rome. This year was my husbands first time in Italy (except on ski's from Zermatt). We did Rome, CT, and then Venice. He wants to save Florence and Tuscany for a seperate trip in the future. By doing a few days in each city it will give you a better idea of what you would like to see on your return visits someday.
I was not in love with Rome from my first visit , but we went there this time because of my husband love of history. I enjoyed and appreciated it more this time through his eyes. Venice is one of my favorite cities I have visited, but maybe it is because I love being on the water. Do you love big cities? Countryside? Water? Museums? A friend and his family could not find a place to stay in their price range stayed in Lucca instead of Florence. I have never been there but you might want to look to Lucca as a place to stay to visit Florence if needed.

With 10 days I would try and get outside of the major cities a bit - even if it is just to Siena or another Tuscan destination as a daytrip from Florence.

Rome, Florence and Venice are perfect for a short first trip. If you need a break from city noise, the parks in Rome and Florence are perfect for that. Take it leisurely and don't try to see everything (impossible anyway) and you will feel like your trip was twice as long. Have a great time.
