Thinking of renting a car to drive from Venice to Tuscany area. Staying @ farm house near SanGimignano. Going to Rome from there. Thinking of Driving to maybe Orviteto then train to Rome. Does this make sense?
If it makes sense to you then by all means go for it. I stay away from European Car Rentals as much as possible. If the train goes there then I'll be on the train. If the only way I can get there is by rental car...then I "might" drive. Otherwise - trains all the way!
Personal opinion...car person here... have driven this lots of times and love it. Freedom to explore at your own pace and find hidden treasures that most train travelers don't see. Stopping at vineyards and hilltop villages on a whim...that is my idea of travel. When I have done this route before I happened to be going to Florence, then Rome, so I dropped my car there and took the train to Rome. It was quite easy.
Jerry, I had a very similar plan originally because I think having a car is probably the easiest way to get the most out of staying at a farm house in Tuscany. And I'd selected Orvieto as the perfect spot to pick up/drop off a car. (Plus, it looks to be a cool place to visit too.) I had to abandon the plan when our travel dates changed and I couldn't match the apartment rental availability with the car pick up/drop off. The rental agencies are closed on Sundays and close early on Saturdays. I haven't even set foot on Italian soil yet (so you might want to put more weight on the experienced travelers' advice than mine), but this is a long way of saying, just keep things like that in mind. And enjoy! :)
The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is paying for a car and a train on the same day. If you already have the car, why not just motor on in to Rome? It ain't that hard.
