Tips for taking out large sum of $$$ for hotel payment?

Many of our hotels want to be paid in cash for the full amount when we arrive. We don't want to travel with a bunch of cash, what are your recommendations? We have a $300 limit on each ATM withdrawal daily.

First, you can have your bank raise your daily limit. Most will go to about 500 but see if they can do more. Another thing you can do is open a second account at a different bank so you have two ATM card and can take out at least 600 a day, more if they raise your limit. donna

You did not mention the location of these hotels. However, if these are small towns, do not rely on the local ATM to be full of cash. It was our experience that they were not "serviced" daily. In fact, our hotel (a RS recommended property) suggested we bring Euro Travelers Checks instead of cash to pay our bill. We obtained these at our local bank here in the U.S. and took them with us. I know most people on this forum think travelers checks are a thing of the past. However, it worked for us!

I would never recommend anyone going to Europe with only one type of any card from one financial institution. We each take an ATM DEBIT card from different banks as well as a credit card each also from different banks. That policy saved our bacon a couple of years ago in Ireland. We do not travel with a lot of cash and let any place that we stay who wants all the rent up front that it may take a day or two to get it all out of the ATM machines. We have never been turned down with that approach and we go to Europe every summer. As someone else has posted, we always ask for an increase in our daily ATM withdrawal limit just for the time we are going to be gone. And, we always contact each financial institution who's plastic we are taking to tell them when, where, and when we will be traveling. AND, then we ask them to repeat that information back to us to make sure they have it correctly after a screwup one year. Good luck and happy travels.
