My husband and I will be traveling to Italy in 2012 and we were wondering if bicycle rentals are common in Italy. I don't think I want to drive and we are taking trains from city to city. Any info in much appreciated!

Yes - you can rent in many places. An internet search will yield results for the cities you are interested in and they can also be rented in many places in Tuscany. However, if you want a specific type of bicycle, it will be more difficult. My brother in law always wants what he calls a "road bike" (super lightweight) - we are having a bit of trouble finding these for rent in Rome and Florence as they have more city type bikes or they are only available for tours. Also traffic in the cities is pretty brutal so consider that also if you are planning to ride in town.

I'm heading to Milan in June. I understand there is a municipal bike share program. I wonder if anyone knows about that?
