How does one travel from Nice, to Portofino, to Cinque Terre and stop and spend a few days in each? Is there a train that goes to these towns? We don't want to "hike" from one town to the next in the Cinque Terre. How do we get from one town to the next? Should we rent a car once we cross into Italy from France? We would like to stay a night or two in Portofino, sightsee our way down to Monterosso or Vernazza and stay there for a couple of days We will be on our way to Rome so we will probably continue by train after spending a few days along the Italian Riviera. We have 4 days from the time we leave Nice to get to Rome.

The closest train station to Portofino is at Santa Margherita Ligure. There is train service between all the Cinque Terre towns. For train timetables go to www.bahn.de. Click on "Internat. Guests" for English. After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.

I had no luck finding a hotel room in Portofino(in my price range) so we are just going to "park" ourselves in Santa Margherita and use that as our base to Pfino and CT. There are all day boat trips to 3 CT towns from Santa Marg. Has anyone done this?
