Phones in Europe

What's the best way to have phone access in Europe, (Italy and Croatia)? In the past we bought a card to use in public phones. Is that still the best way to go? Or, do we get a SIM card for our US phone? Or, buy a phone over there?

Carole, I find that having a Cell phone is the "best way to go". I use voice calls sparingly, and text most of the time. You won't be able to even consider using your U.S. Cell phone unless it's an unlocked quad-band GSM and your home network is either AT&T or T-Mobile. If you could provide more information on your circumstances, it would be easier to offer more specific advice. Cheers!

I bought an unlocked GSM quad band Motorola V-190 used on Ebay for $18 delivered. It seems to work well (holds a charge) and came with a charger. I plan to buy a sim/tim card when I arrive in Milan.
