What is the best way to get to Florence from the US? Fly into Rome and take the train or fly directly to Florence.

Fly into Florence. If you are visting more than one city consider an "open-jaw" plane ticket.

It depends on your preferences. there are currently no direct flights from the US to Florence. You will have to fly to a carriers European gateway and then connect to Florence. Compare prices and connections etc. You should be able to fly direct to either Milan Malpensa or FCO in Rome. From either it should take you about 2 and a half hours on the train to Florence.
