France and Italy

We are planning on taking a trip to South of France (Nice, Cannes) Monaco, and then head to Italy.
My husband and I are traveling with another couple and would like to rent a car in nice, drive to St Paul de Vance, Monaco and then to Italy. First off, do you think its fasible to drive or should we be looking into Train/Plane. We are thinking of a 2 week trip. Can you please suggest some sample itineraries/cities to visit.

I would suggest not renting a car. You can take a bus from Nice to St Paul de Vance and trains to Cannes, Monaco and into Italy. Some great places to visit in Italy are Santa Margherita, Levanto, the Cinque Terra and several others in Liguria. In only two weeks, you will have to choose which few cities to visit. All are easily reached by train, thereby eliminating all the hassles of a car - parking being the main one.

Nice to Monaco is an easy drive pretty straightforward. However, it's a lot longer drive to get to the more interesting places in Italy from Monaco. You might want to consider picking a town or two in Italy as bases and taking the train for the longer stretches, then renting a car to get around locally. It'll also be cheaper. One way France->Italy car rental is doable but there will be a surcharge.
