6 weeks in Italy

Going to Italy for 6 weeks Spending 14 days in Rome about 4 days around Assisi and about 8 to 10 days around Florence and then about 3 days in Venice. Will be renting a car for about a week to see the back roads any suggestions.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Lucky you! If your 3 days in Venice is truly 3 full days/4 nights, you might be OK, but try to give heer at last 3 full days.

Time of year would impact other suggestions. If summer (June-mid-Sept) cool off in the Dolomites. We like Ortisei and the Val Gardena a lot. Also in the north Verona worth a day or two or maybe Lake Como.

What kind of suggestions do you want for Rome?

For any advice, it would be very useful to know when you are going.

For a week with a car, look at the DK Eyewitness Back Roads Italy. There are some 20 suggested drives, usually 4-6 days.

The Michelin Green guides are also good for suggestions.

Rick's Rome book includes expanded walking tour and museum tour info (also available as downloadable Audio Tours), plus coverage of Hadrian's Villa and Tivoli. Then you'd have to turn back to the bigger Italy book for his details on Orvieto, which is also an easy daytrip by train at 1hr15 each way.
