6 Nights with Car in Southern Switzerland - April 7th-2018

Hi,
I'd like some suggestions on where to go for my 6 nights...starting is Stresa and ending in Milan.

My thought was to drive to Tasch and take the train to Zermatt on the first day, maybe spend 2 nights there??? Then spend to more days in Stresa, taking day trips to different areas. From then I thought about driving up to Lucerne, it's about 210k...is it worth it? or should I just drive to Lugano which would be much closer than Lucerne.
I am spending a week in Lake Como, no car, and have booked 3 tours...one tour by train to Bernia?
And also spending 4 nights in Milan. Three at the beginning and 1 at the end of our trip.

Also, any suggestions on where to stay if flying out of the MXP airport.

Thanks, Ingrid

Not sure the meaning of this statement. Could you elaborate.

Also not sure what your itinerary is as you zip back and forth with no clear time line. Maybe spell it out linearly.

In addition to Sam's very good questions, I have to say, that is a lot of time in Milan. Do you know what you want to see and do there given 2 full days at the beginning of the trip? Personally, I would add more time to Zermatt and ditch the car.

Sorry for not being very clear.
My husband and I are leaving April 6th from Vancouver to Milan. We are renting a car and heading to Stresa. We will have the car for 7 days, 6 nights. My question is where should we go? Reading the last reply, I am thinking that it may not be a good idea to drive to Zermatt because of the road conditions. So, should we drive to Lucerne, Lugano?? We need to be back in Milan to meet up with my husbands co worker. We will stay 3 nights in Milan, then head to Como Lake for a convention. We have 1 week there, so we will be able to tour around the area. We will have our last night in Milan to catch a plane the next morning.
Thanks,
Ingrid

Ingrid,

You may already be aware of this but when renting cars in Italy, each driver listed on the rental form must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. The IDP's are valid for one year and available for a small fee at any BCAA office.

You'll also have to be careful to avoid the ZTL (limited traffic) areas which are common in many Italian towns. Each pass through one will generate hefty fines, which you may not know about until several months after you return home. You may also encounter speed (photo radar) cameras in some areas.

When you drive into Switzerland, you'll have to buy a Swiss highway tax vignette. If you're caught without it, hefty fines!

If you want to go to Zermatt, it looks like an easy train trip from Stresa; there are a few departures per day with just one change and total time 2.5 hours. That way you could avoid any concerns about driving conditions.
