5 nights in eastern Sicily

Hello

Flying into Catania in October with my brother. Will have 5 nights until we fly to Germany for a conference. Interests include wine #1 and history #2. Catania seems like not ideal for home base for all 6 nights. Was thinking 2 nights there then head over to Mt Etna and finish in Syracuse. Has anyone stayed on or near the mountain ? Particularly on the north side ? Really want to visit wineries and walk vineyards. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. I’ve been to Italy 4 times, never Sicily.

Can't help you with wineries, but I would be inclined to give the most time to Syracuse (Ortygia, specifically). I don't think you need to stay in Catania at all.

I’m not a Catania fan and thinks it’s worth less than a full day. It does have decent bus connections to other places. I too would spend more time in the Syracusa area. For Mt. Etna, ensure you have a plan B in case it erupts again. It’s been erupting fairly regularly for over a year now.

Does the Mt Etna eruption apply if I am just interested in the North side wineries ?
