my family of 4 has arranged to lay over (from another trip)in Amsterdam for 6 days. we'd really like to do cinque terre, but are not limited to that idea. If we do CT, what's the best way to get there from Amsterdam? Any other ideas of an affordable and interesting way to spend those days. We've been to Brugge and France, both more than once. We've been to Italy, but not CT.

There are fun things to do in Holland. Haarlem, Delft, cycle around Edam go , Eindoven. Flower market etc. Realize that CT is a very small area with 5 villages (mostly walking), beaches are smallest I seen. It is nice to visit if you are in the area but to me not if you are in Netherlands.

Why don't you check out which low-cost carrier flights run from Amsterdam... you can use skyscanner.com for example. I know of a Dutch airline called Transavia, but on Skyscanner you should have the fill picture.
