6 days in Italy

My wife and I have 6 nights after leaving Rome and staying in the Lake Region in mid- Sept. We are trying to decide how to split time staying in Montepulciano, Figline, Siena and Lucca. There is a place in Figline that appeals to us. How should we split our nights? Should we make Siena a day trip? How about 1 night in Montepulciano, 3 nights in Figline and 2 in Lucca or a different combination? Also, should we rent a car or go with public transportation? If car rental where should we pick it up? Thank you, Hal

Personally I like a minimum of three nights in a place. If you are determined to stay in Figline, then see northern Tuscany from there, including Siena and Lucca as daytrips. Then move to Montepulciano for three nights and see more of the southern part of the region. The drive between Montepulciano and Montalcino is lovely. Cortona and Orveito also accessible from there. A car would be ideal for flexibility, use of time, ease of getting to out-of-the-way places.
