I'm planning on a trip to Italy this coming May and found airfare from Chicago to Venice for $485.
I found it througha site called CheapOair.com. Does anyone know if this is a trusted site. This will be my first trip abroad and I have to admit, I'm nervous about booking an oversea flight. Does anyone have any tips?
Hi Pat! I'm not sure about this site, but my husband and I just bought tickets through US Airways from Oregon to Rome in May for $860 (including taxes); so it is possible. The low air fare you found probably does not include taxes, which could be another $300-$400....or....there could be a very long connection flight. If you are weary about using CheapAir.com, you might want to check out the airlines directly; or use Kayak.com. I heard airfares were going up, so you might want to check quickly. Take care and good luck! Tina

According to farecompare.com, the cheapest RT ticket Chicago > Venice in the entire month of May 2011 is $819. Something isn't right about that $485 fare you found.
Not only does that fare not include taxes but it also doesn't include their fees. You'll find that you end up paying as much or more than the airlines will charge. Before you book this fare check to see if it's with a single carrier or not. If it's with more than one carrier and you miss a connecting flight the other airline is not obligated to put you on another plane. Donna
I personally would try to use the airline sites directly. Unless the fares are significantly lower. I would agree I believe Cheapoair is probably not including taxes and fees. I use Kayak to at least monitor for the best air fare. Which has listed in the $750 range to Italy in May. THen look which airlines are the cheapest then go to that airlines websites
Type (or cut/paste) the web address below into your internet browser. According to the many people who have submitted comments to this website, Cheap O Air is not exactly their favorite travel company. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/travel/cheapoair.html
Pat, We just this week booked open jaw tickets out of Chicago, into Rome and home from Geneva (in June) for about $1060 per ticket. I believe the "actual" ticket price was about $750, the rest being taxes and fees. We have been watching fares closely on Kayak, hoping to go out of our home town of Grand Rapids, MI. A week ago, the prices from GR made a big jump while out of Chicago held steady. We didn't want to take a chance and wait, only to have Chicago's prices go up also. Saved about $850 for 2 tickets by going through Chicago. We did book through a travel agent, opting to pay an extra $25 per ticket just for the security of knowing things were booked properly.
We went ahead and bought our tickets for May after reading that fuel prices are expected to keep increasing. And, yes, the taxes and fees can vary greatly depending on the airline. I don't know why that's the case, but it is.
I am in the process of planning a family vac to Italy during the first 2 weeks of july. Unfortunately we are locked into this time period for various reasons. There will be 4 of us traveling. I am hoping to fly out of Albany NY. The rates I am finding are all in the $1450-1500 range. Even starting out from NYC or Boston does not change the rates significantly. I am getting so discouraged. If I could find anything in the $1000 range I would book it in a heartbeat.
Any advice out there?
The best I have seen is Swiss air and it's still 1200-1300.
See the post in General Europe about cheap fare available to Venice. Stay away from Cheapoair, by the way.
I second Swiss! I did a lot of flight comparing for two upcoming trips to Europe, and although not a "deal," Swiss came out to be the least expensive.

Tina, you were lucky - I am looking at $1400 PDX - FCO for the end of June!
Thanks everyone for your help. I did pay a little more through Travelocity ($867) but at least now I feel more at ease.
