We're taking a train from Salerno to Taormina in a few weeks and I'm curious about the time we (and the train) will be on the ferry. Do we stay on the train or can we get off? If we can get off, I'm assuming we'd need to secure our bags. Any experience with this?
Figure about 20-40 mins. on the ferry. Most people choose to get off the train and take the stairs to the upper decks of the car ferry (beautiful panoramas of the Straits of Messina if crossing during daylight hours). To help ensure security of luggage, ask the train ticket agent to LOCK the sliding glass door to your passenger compartment. They will do this for you upon request. I myself took the Trenitalia Intercity (IC) train from Salerno to Sicily several years ago, and do highly recommend the experience of crossing the Straits. You can even purchase a beverage or coffee from the bar on the ferry, if that is your preference.
