my personal expierence:
ok so i am going to italy , 2 weeks , in April, from Denver.
i book thru a local travel agency in FEBRUARY, cost: 1,083.00.great.
then.."just for fun" in MAY, i was in "ORBITZ" web site: SAME flight, SAME plane, SAME departing /arriving schedual..850.00!!!!!
called travel agency, after a few months , got a voucher for 240.00. i was kind of suprised you can get punished for booking early. if i ever so this again: am not sure what to do..both i suppose.

www.kayak.com is a great site. It searches all the airline sites, all the major travel sites (expedia, orbitz, etc.) and then gives you the best available options.

Jim, yield management (getting maximum revenue from each flight) is a black art. If bookings are high early, prices go up. If they are low, they go down. It's all about the airlines trying to maximize both their revenue and their yield (% of seats filled on any one flight). I have found that, unless it is a really busy time of year to travel, the best deals are three months or so out after airlines know their booking rates.
