Our family is putting together a week trip in early December. Our first choice was Scotland because we are somewhat novice travelers but after looking at weather/limited sun, we have begun planning to go to Rome. What is your opinion of going to Edinburgh in December? Or would you go to Rome?
Edinburgh is a wonderful city to visit but if it is too cold, you will not enjoy it as much. We went in September, a bit cool but still ok. Lots of walking
Been to both places in the last two years. Yes the days are short in Edinburgh, but it is a terrific place to visit in the winter. They have a wonderful winter carnival in the central park-look at the dates for that. The museums are really wonderful and the food is, well, pretty dam awful.
We stayed at Novotel hotel near grass market area and it was reasonable with good breakfast and very nice service(and a pool and sauna-nice after day of walking)
The weather was cool but not cold while were there(week of Christmas)
Rome is of course larger and has more world class kinds of attractions. I suspect the weather is a bit nicer.
Rome can be cold and rainy as well, but likely much better weather than Edinburgh overall. I vote for Rome.
Rome! Most people come from April through September -- so by coming in December, you'll beat the crowds the city is notorious for, PLUS the heat. Edinburgh's pretty manageable, crowd-wise, all year round (even during its August festival), and as other posters pointed out, it'll be cold and rainy.
