Does anyone know some good and reasonable places to stay near Rome. We want to stay near Rome, but not have to drive into Rome. We will be driving around Venice and Florence and ending up in Rome. Any suggestions.

One of the things that the Rick Steves guide suggests is staying in Orvieto and taking the train to Rome for a day trip (just a little over an hour).

Can you drop your car off in Orvieto and take the train to Rome to stay the night. I just spoke with my sister-in-law and she said they stayed in Orvieto and took the train. They wish they had not done. They would have stayed in Rome to enjoy the evening ambience.
We are basing out of Orvieto to tour Umbria/Tuscany regions then dropping the car off before going to Rome for our last two nights.
