5 Nights in Tuscany

Hello fellow travelers! My husband and I will be vacationing in Italy for the first time in June. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions for Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, etc.

On day 13 of our 3-week-trip we will pick up our rental car when leaving Florence. We will drive to San Gimignano, Volterra, and San Galgano Monastery and stay in Siena 2 nights. Then Montepulciano will be our base for 5 nights and we would like to see the countryside, including day trips to Assisi, Orvieto, and Civita. Wineries or wine bars, and of course the art and architecture, are on our agenda. Wine bar or winery suggestions? Must see/must do for this region? After this part of our vacation we will drive to Rome and drop off the rental car and spend our last 3 nights there before flying home.

We are looking forward to our 3 weeks in Italy!

Couple of thoughts.

You are close to Cortona and Perugia, they are the way to Assisi. Just south of there is Montefalco, with lots of wineries, and, sagrantino wine trail through the vineayrs. Not Tuscany, but Umbria. You could do a loop, taking in Perugia, Cortona, Assisi, Montefalco, down to Todi and the Parco Fluviale del Tevere (Tiber River).

Gordon-
That sounds interesting! Is this something that can be done as a single day trip? Do you have any favorite wine bars or wineries?

Assisi is a beautiful city, and I found it quite peaceful as I walked around away from the basilica--which is mobbed but glorious. Assisi is a full-day sort of destination to me; even better overnight. Cortona and Todi are smaller. If I remember correctly all three of those towns are quite hilly, which means that they aren't quite as easy to blitz through as one might think.

That's definitely not a loop I'd want to make in one day, and I don't think Gordon was suggesting that you try that, but rather that it would be a coherent loop with one or more overnights.

Assisi, Orvieto and Civita are all in Umbria. Base in Assisi (2 nights) and Perugia (2 nights) for those cities, plus one night in Monepulciano.

I agree with acraven, that loop through Umbria is beautiful but all of the suggested towns in one day would be very hard. I would definitely overnight (two nights would be better) in Assisi, take a look at Spello and Trevi (very nearby); Todi and Cortona could be a one-day trip, I would spend more time in Todi than in Cortona. Montefalco is one of my favorite places, but if you only have a day, you could visit from Perugia (which should have two nights)
