It depends on your itinerary for the area. Which is....?

Not at all imo. We've stayed in Sorrento twice for 7 nights each time and left wishing we could stay longer. Sorrento itself is charming and fun and a great place to relax. It's also a great base for seeing the AC by boat or bus, Positano, Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii, Hercolano, Mt Vesuvius, Naples, the Archeological Museum...

You don't go to Sorrento for the history, although 'Sorrentina' goes back over 2200 years. And truth be told, you don't go for its 'Italian feel' either. To my way of thinking, it's a little manufactured, a little soulless if you will. The small streets, with the faux-quaint, limoncello-heavy shops, the leather stores, etc. And the non-touristy part of Sorrento looks like any other medium-to-lower income Italian town.

But what you do go to Sorrento for is the great food--many reasonably-priced restaurants in the Piazza Tasso area, although down at the marina near the swankier coastal hotels they'll be probably twice the price--and then as stated upthread the easy transportation from the train & bus station to anyplace else on the peninsula, and Naples to the north, Salerno and Paestum to the south, no more than a couple hours away.

Those qualities alone make it worth the stay, because it's quite nice to leave late morning, do your daytrip wherever, and come back to your hotel or B&B, freshen up or nap, then walk down the street to a wonderful dinner. We did this in mid-March for 5 nights and although I didn't really appreciate it at the time, the ease of doing this daily routine made that part of the trip special.

No, it's not too many but too few. Sorrento itself, Pompeii, Positano, Amalfi, Vesuvius, visit Naples, Capri, etc. We had 5 nights and still had to drop Capri.

5 nights, or four full days, is perhaps even one too few. Consider your days visiting ...
1. Positano
2. Pompeii & Herculaneum
3. Capri
4. Naples
5. Amalfi & Ravello

Tracy, I see you've asked several similar questions - is xx nights in (insert name of town) too many?

Please start a new post, with the fixed contours of your trip - how many days, where you're starting from, do you have airfare already purchased and if so to where, who is going, etc. Then say what places you're thinking of seeing. Also, let us know any special interests, or things you're trying to avoid. With this information, we can give better advice.

Whether a certain amount of time in a place is too much, too little, or just right is determined by many factors. Some are subjective, and for me, a big one is unknown - how I feel about a place once I'm there. But others are more objective. As said by Ilja, Sorrento has many nearby sights, and you could easily fill 5 nights there - that is, if those things interest you. Or, you may just want to hang out in Sorrento itself and relax. Or, you may want to cut days from Sorrento and see other things instead. There's no one right answer.

Harold is right. Post in General to build a plan for your complete trip, then hit Italy to ask about individual locations, etc. Otherwise the many questions just pull you in lots of different directions.

I appreciate the specific question, but I agree with Harold and David that knowing your overall plan would get you better advice.

Is 5 nights too much? If it leaves you only one night in Venezia, for example, I think it's too much. But where it falls in your itinerary makes a difference, too. I like having a longer stay toward the middle of a trip, others like it at the beginning or end.

As you can read in a recent thread, Paestum is a long, difficult daytrip from Sorrento. Otherwise, I agree with previous replies.

That's why some of us commented as we did? As with the rest of your "Are ___ nights too long?" questions, it can be nearly impossible to provide useful advice when there's no background to go on. This sort of information up front is really helpful:

• Rough itinerary (list of desired destinations) and total number of nights you have to work with
• Number of people in your party and approx. ages: e.g. small children along can make a difference
• Time of year you intend to travel: this can also make a difference
• Types of attractions/activities which do and do not interest you

Other details - such how you intend to get around, if anyone in your party has a mobility disability, etc - can be helpful as well. Otherwise we're sort of shooting in the dark!

spending 5 nights there at the end of this month, then 5 in Cetera. I'll let you know!

Using it as a base to visit the region!
