5 nights in Lucca or 3 Lucca/2 Florence

I've had my itinerary set for months--we will be traveling for a month in June/July. The Italy portion of our trip involves 3 nights Venice, 3 nights CT, 5 nights Lucca (with day trips planned) and 4 nights Rome (with day trip to Pompeii).

Last night I had a moment of realization as I was working on the fine details for the Lucca portion. I was planning one day in Florence for the Uffizi and Accademia. Then another day we are planning on a tour of Tuscany with a small group which leaves from Florence, so we'd have to train from Lucca early in the morning for that. And then of course when we go to Rome we have to train to Florence yet again.

Initially it sounded good to settle in one quieter spot for 5 days, but now that schedule is sounding nutty. I'm now thinking we should do 3 nights in Lucca, and then head to Florence for another two nights. Since Lucca is so close, if we check out of our apartment early and stash our bags at the train station, we can do the Uffizi and Accadamia on the first day, the Tuscany tour on the second day, and then wander around Florence in the evening after the tour and for a few hours the next morning before training out to Rome on the third day. Although it involves checking in and out of an additional apartment, it'll save us at least 6 hours of train/bus travel time over 3 days.

Thoughts? We are traveling with our 2 teenage daughters.

Hi Amelia,

It sounds like you have a pretty good pace of location changes planned into your trip. I do agree with your re-evaluation though and if it were me, I would actually probably do three nights in Florence and two in Lucca.

Have fun! It sounds like a wonderful time with your daughters.

I loved Lucca, but I would split between there and Florence to since you have so many Florence things planned!

Amelia,

Do you have a guide to Italy? If you do, I would suggest to count the pages for Lucca and Florence (and for your other places), calculate the ratio and plan your stays accordingly.

Your revised plan sounds fine, you can still relax in Lucca (one of my favorite places in Italy) and have time in Firenze.

Here's an idea. 2 nights in 5 Terre, 3 in Lucca and 3 in Firenze.

I agree with your idea to stay two nights in Florence. You want to begin & end the day without a train trip back to another location, when possible. Enjoy your trip to Italy!

I too am planning a 5 night stay in Lucca in the middle of our month long trip to Italy. Im including one day trip to cinque terre and perhaps another to Pisa. I look at it more as a respite stop where we can decompres a bit before heading to Florence for a few days and then on to Rome.

It depends on where you want to go while in Tuscany, but I would give more time to Florence and less to Lucca. Lucca can be visited in a few hours.

Ralph, that is exactly what our plan for Lucca has been. We will be bouncing through big cities for a month (other than the 3 nights in CT), and Lucca was meant to be a break from the crowds and craziness before gearing up again for Rome and Barcelona (Florence wasn't in the original game plan). So I think I'm going to keep it at the newly revised 3 days in Lucca and 2 in Florence.

Thanks for all the input!
