5 days to play before a cruise out of Rome

We will have 5 days to tour on our own before heading out on a cruise. We would really like to see Florence, Venice, and Rome, but not sure we can cram all that into 5 days. How do you suggest we divide our days?

Rome is certainly worthy of a 5 day visit as it is one of the great European cities.
You could take three days seeing Rome's highlights and a minimum 2 days to see Florence. But every time you move from city to city, you essentially lose a day traveling.
Roman history, culture and great foods are best taken slowly.

Save Florence and Venice for your next trip. We were in Rome last Easter--out 8th trip to Italy.

If you have not been to Rome previously, spend them there. You will not run out of things to see/do.

If you do feel compelled to do more than Rome, Florence would be the obvious choice. I would go there 1st for 2 nights then the other 3 in Rome. Finish in Rome to be close to the cruise port.

Suggest spending all five days in Rome. There is way more than enough to keep you busy and interested the entire time. If you must do more than Rome, then consider only Florence as it's closest. Perhaps go directly to Florence on the day of arrival. Then back to Rome and leave from there for the cruise port. Just remember that every time you relocate you'll lose three quarters to an entire day in the process. It's not just travel time. It's the time needed to pack up and check out, get to the train station and wait for the train, get to the new hotel and check in and unpack -- and that's if everything goes as planned.
