Greetings! I will have 5 full days in Sorrento. I would like to at least tour Rome and Pompeii. Is this doable in five days? What else can I do in and around Sorrento in five days? Additionally, suggestions for Airbnb's near shore? Looking at spending less than 200.00 per day on lodging. Any other thoughts would be great.
If you are planning on visiting Rome by taking a day trip from Sorrento, forget it.
5 days is great to see Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.
Month and Year? Most people dream of a day in Sorrento from a week in Rome. Neither is a very good idea, because they are at least 2.5 hours apart. Sorrento books up six months in advance, especially cheaper places. Sorrento has virtually no beaches because it is built on a cliff.
I will be travelling mid October.
I agree with what others have said. 5 days will allow Sorrento, Pompeii, Naples, Capri and Ischia or Procida.
We stayed for a week, a while back, and stayed in St. Agata, at the wonderful Il Corallo. But there are lots of places in Sorrento itself.
We were in Sorrento for 5 days last spring. Agree with the others that a day-trip to Rome is not the best idea. While a 2.5 hour travel time seems to allow for it, the trains in the area can be unreliable, the roads are narrow and winding so traffic can be slow if you are driving or taking a bus. It's a bit of a crapshoot, in other words. Might take 2.5 hours, might take 5. We had to wait for 2 trains from Rome, because the first ones we were planning to take were cancelled. We took a "shuttle" bus from Sorrento to Naples at the end of our trip - should have taken a bit over an hour, it took 3.
We loved Sorrento, which is a fun blend of touristy yet still very "Italian." We did a food tour, which was great; went to Capri; did an Amalfi coast tour (via Mondo Tours in a van, but would skip that and do a ferry if we ever went again). The city itself is worth spending some time wandering around in, down to the Marina Grande (which is the small marina lol). Pompeii is a very doable day-trip, very amazing. Have fun!

Definitely take a bus/ferry to the town of Amalfi and then take a 20 minute bus ride north to Ravello!! HIGHLY recommend it! :)
