Hi all! My husband and I found a great airfare to Rome and are visiting over thanksgiving break. I’m wondering if folks think with such a short trip, we should stick to Rome and maybe a day trip, or try to hit Florence too? I’ve been to Rome but was quite young; never been to Florence and spouse has never been to Italy period! I adored Rome and always wanted to go back. We’re more interested in Roman history and renaissance art/culture than churches for their own sake. Thanks in advance!
Welcome!
I would stay in Rome and maybe a day trip somewhere small like Orvieto.
Not Florence
Florence needs time of its own.
With only 5 days- how many NIGHTS is that- 5 or 6? If 5 you have 4.5 full days- don't waste any of that time with more travel.
You won't run out of things to do in Rome. Days are short in November.
Does 5 days include your arrival and departure days? If so, that's only 3 full days and I'd stick to Rome. If you have five full days, I'd consider a day trip as well but still not waste a day moving to a new location. Checking out, travelling, and checking in again eats up at least half a day.
Fun! Stick to Rome, SO much to see!! I think I've been there more than 2 dozen times, always find more places to visit! The more you plan ahead, I think the better your trip will work out. Even listing restaurants / places to take a weight off your tired feet will help. I set up a private Google map with suggested restaurants. My personal 2 FAVORITE museum are the Palazzo Massimo across the street from Roma Termini & Palazzo Altemps, 'local' Roman museums that are very well sign posted in English and virtually empty. We were there over Christmas to NY and were virtually the only people in the museums, unimagianble in Rome, right?? Darius does a great job of explaining the museums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6g75E6Lzls. Here's our trip report in case it's helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6g75E6Lzls
That’s such a short amount of time that even though I move to different cities a lot, I would be tempted to just stay in Rome. Any day trips are taking away daylight hours, too.
Without leaving the city, you could go over to Ostia Antica.
We just got back from Italy, and I bet I’ve said 10 times “we could have spent the whole 2 weeks in Rome and still not have seen everything.” There’s just history absolutely everywhere. Also very jealous of the weather you’ll have in November s June/July!
