5 days in early september

Hello, my husband and I are going to be joining a vigorous hiking group from August 24 to September for any Italian Alps Aosta Valley. We will have around five days after that from September 4 to September 9 or 10th to explore a little. I am longing for the charm of the villages and the coast but I am concerned the Qinque Terre would be very crowded and hot at that time of year. Any suggestions for a cooler, less touristed small village experience for about five days? The coast would be nice but we could consider the Italian Lakes region or Tuscany or..... We will have a car.

Thank you for any ideas or advice.

Where will you be flying home from?
If Milan then either Lake Maggiore or Lake Como would work
Car not really necessary in either location but could be useful

I would agree that the lakes would be an excellent choice. There is a direct train from Milan to Varenna on Lake Como and the ferry can take you any where you want from there. We loved staying in Varenna 4 years ago, very peaceful and relaxing at the Albergo Milano hotel. If you want to splurge you can stay at a hotel in Bellagio , the lake is just an wonderful place to decompress and enjoy just being in Italy.

Thank you, the lakes do look lovely. We were also thinking of the tuscan hill towns - would they still be pretty hot? crowded?

My guess is that they'd be hot but I always check historical data at timeanddate.com. As for tourists, no one really knows what this year will be like, but in previous years, that would be high season.

Thank you for that advice about the hills, I was afraid it would be too hot and crowded.

Where can I find more information about hiking around the italian lakes? Is it helpful to have a car if hiking is your goal?

Thank you for any suggestions
